Signs your heating system needs attention
You don't need to diagnose it yourself — but knowing what you're seeing makes the call easier.
Some rooms never warm up
Uneven heat usually means airflow, zoning or a control problem — not necessarily a dying system.
It runs constantly, or in short bursts
Short-cycling wears equipment out fast and almost always points to a fixable underlying cause.
Banging, rumbling or squealing
Noise is information. A rumble on start-up, a bang in the pipes and a squeal from the blower are three different problems.
Heating bills climbing without a colder winter
Efficiency loss creeps in through dirty burners, bad combustion settings and duct leaks.
The burner won't stay lit
Ignition and flame-sensing faults are common and usually a same-visit repair.
It's over 15 years old and needs a big part
That's the point where repair-versus-replace math is worth running honestly.
What we do on heating
- No-heat emergency diagnosisWe find the actual cause instead of swapping parts until something works.
- Furnace and boiler repairIgnition, controls, circulators, zone valves, heat exchangers, venting.
- System replacement and installationProperly sized for the house, installed so it can be serviced later.
- Gas and oil heatBoth — including oil burner service and cleaning, which is in-house.
- Thermostats, zoning and controlsIncluding the retrofits that finally fix the cold room upstairs.
- Annual heating maintenanceThe fall check that keeps you off the January emergency list.
Repair or replace?
The honest answer depends on three things: the age of the equipment, what specifically failed, and how the rest of the system looks. A ten-year-old furnace with a bad igniter is a repair, full stop. A twenty-year-old unit with a cracked heat exchanger is not a repair — it's a safety issue.
Where it gets genuinely debatable is the middle: a fifteen-year-old system facing a major component. We'll tell you what the repair costs, what we'd expect the remaining life to be, and what a replacement would look like — and then it's your call, not a sales pitch. Consultations on replacement are free.
